U15 Hurling

U15 hurling is a recently revived competition to bridge the gap between u14 which ends in April and u16 which did not previously start until July (although that is now March) . It is entirely conceivable that a graduating u14 might not have a game for a over a year. The u15 is intended to ease the transition although the competition has the 8 team division subdivided into 4 team groups to shorten the length of the competitiom

The competition does not start until September and Martin Barrett is in charge of affairs.

U15 Hurling 2014 Overview

posted 12 Mar 2015, 12:31 by Kenneth Fox

Maigh Cuilinn competed in Group 2 Div 1A of the 2014 U15 Hurling Championship. Our group consisted of 4 teams – Mountbellew/Moylough, Salthill/Knocknacarra, Liam Mellows and Maigh Cuilinn. The top two teams in Group 1 and Group 2 contested the A1 Semi Finals.

This Moycullen team prepared well and expected to do well in the Championship but unfortunately there were a number of players missing when the Championship began due to unforeseen circumstances.

The opening game was played in Baile Doite on 11th sept V Salthill/Knocknacarra. Maigh Cuilinn started well and led this game at half time by 4 points. Salthill piled on the pressure in the second half and scored 3 goals in the closing stages to win the game on a scoreline of Maigh Cuilinn 0-10, Salthill/Knocknacarra 3-4. The winning goal was conceded inside the last minute of the match.  Players and Management were disappointed with the result but there were still two matches to play to get back on track. Unfortunately we were unable to get the results required with defeat in Mountbellew ( 2-14 to 3-7 ) and defeat at home against Liam mellows ( 1-11 to 3-10 ).  All in all it was a disappointing campaign but the team can take some heart from the fact that the biggest defeat was only by 5 points and also the fact that the best performance of the campaign was against Mountbellew/Moylough and in the end Mountbellew/Moylough contested the Co Final.

This team have shown great character and commitment when they decided to train over the Winter months in preparation for next years U16 Championship. Training is at 11am on Sunday mornings and it is encouraging to see the number of players that are attending every Sunday. A special word of thanks to Kenneth Clancy, Morgan Darcy and Seamus McDonagh for their support over the year. I would also like to thank the player’s parents for supporting the team during 2014.

Keep up the good work and our reward will come!!
